È una donna, si chiama Bríd Rodgers ed è il ministro dell’educazione nazionale e del lavoro nell’Irlanda del Nord. Il che non farebbe notizia nella stampa locale se questa distinta signora non fosse ospite del nostro territorio. Sta infatti passando un periodo di ferie con marito, figlia e tre nipotini presso alcuni amici di Recanati, i signori Monti, e tutti i giorni scende al mare da noi, nello stabilimento balneare Nenetta, in pieno centro, all’altezza dell’hotel Vincenzo Bianchi. La signora Rodgers viene dalle nostre parti ormai da tanti anni, ma adesso che è diventata ministro la sua presenza assume un rilievo diverso e senz’altro maggiore. Nel suo Paese l’illustre ospite è anche una importante esponente del partito socialdemocratico irlandese. Qui in Italia viene in vacanza, oltre che per amicizia con i Monti, per amore vero della Penisola, della quale le piace quasi tutto, persino qualche difetto. Dicono gli amici recanatesi che quando se ne torna in patria porta con sé tutto quello che può, tutto ciò che in qualche modo si identifica con il così detto italian style. Preferenze spiccate per la gastronomia, spaghetti in prima fila insieme alla mozzarella. Dunque, anche noi abbiamo il nostro importante personaggio straniero, che non ha però alcuna voglia di mettersi in mostra; se non fosse stato per la signora Monti, che ce ne ha segnalato la presenza, nessuno ne avrebbe saputo nulla. Da parte nostra siamo più che felici della predilezione che lady Rodgers mostra per la terra di Leopardi e il mare che la impreziosisce…… La signora ministro partirà martedì prossimo per tornare a casa. La salutiamo con cordialità e con l’arrivederci alla prossima estate, ben contenti della sua presenza a Porto Recanati. Se non andiamo errati, si tratta della prima personalità di governo estero in carica che si bagna qui (l.p. Corriere Adriatico del 15 agosto 1999).

La notizia ebbe una coda curiosa. I comandi superiori dei carabinieri s’inalberarono perché non ne sapevano nulla e se la presero con il comandante della stazione, che me lo riferì. Gli dissi: “Sarebbe stato giusto che si fosse arrabbiato lei. Chi deve sapere che entra in Italia, e ci va a zonzo, un ministro di uno stato estero? Non certo un comandante di stazione, ma chi sta più in alto sì”. Credo ancora di essere stato nel giusto.
