È un’epidemia globale, una strage in continuo aumento ma non è colpa di un virus o un batterio: la “peste nera” del XXI secolo si chiama inquinamento. Nel mondo ogni anno 12,6 milioni persone muoiono per colpa dei danni che l’uomo arreca all’ambiente. È l’allarme lanciato dall’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, secondo cui una morte su 4 a livello mondiale è determinata da fattori di rischio ambientale legati al luogo in cui si vive o si lavora.

In Europa, nel 2012, l’esposizione a fattori di rischio ambientale è costata la vita a 1,4 milioni di persone. Il rapporto presentato oggi, dal titolo “Preventing disease through healthy environments: a global assessment of the burden of disease from environmental risks”, spiega che i fattori di rischio ambientale come l’inquinamento dell’aria, dell’acqua e del suolo, le esposizioni chimiche, i cambiamenti climatici e le radiazioni ultraviolette, contribuiscono all’insorgenza di più di 100 malattie e danni alla salute.

“Un ambiente sano è alla base di una popolazione sana”, commenta Flavia Bustreo, Vice Direttore Generale dell’OMS per la Salute della Famiglia, delle Donne e dei Bambini. “Se i Paesi non intraprendono al più presto azioni volte a ridurre l’inquinamento e migliorare le condizioni dell’ambiente in cui si vive e si lavora, in milioni continueranno ad ammalarsi e a morire prematuramente”.

Il nuovo rapporto OMS delinea azioni concrete che i Paesi possono mettere in atto per invertire la tendenza al rialzo registrata in termini di malattie e morti legate all’inquinamento ambientale. Fra le principali azioni si cita ad esempio la riduzione dell’uso di combustibili solidi per cucinare o l’utilizzo di tecnologie energetiche a bassa emissione di carbonio. Nel rapporto emerge che i più esposti ai fattori di rischi ambientali sono i bambini al di sotto dei cinque anni e gli adulti di età compresa fra i 50 e i 75 anni. Ogni anno 1,7 milioni di bambini al di sotto dei cinque anni e 4,9 milioni di adulti di età compresa tra i 50 ei 75 perdono la vita per cause che potrebbero essere evitate grazie ad una migliore gestione dell’ambiente.

Analizzando le diverse regioni del mondo, il rapporto dell’Oms rileva che nel 2012 i paesi a basso e medio reddito del Sud-Est asiatico e le regioni del Pacifico Occidentale hanno registrato il numero più alto di morti legate all’inquinamento ambientale, con un totale di 7,3 milioni di decessi, la maggior parte dei quali legati all’inquinamento dell’aria. Nel dettaglio, Nel dettaglio, si contano 2,2 milioni di morti ogni anno in Africa, 847 000 decessi all’anno nella Regione delle Americhe, 854 000 decessi ogni anno nella Regione Mediterranea dell’Est, 1,4 milioni di morti ogni anno in Europa, 3,8 milioni di morti ogni anno nella Regione del Sud-est asiatico, 3,5 milioni di morti ogni anno nella Regione del Pacifico Occidentale.
