Ohibò, gli spiriti: giungono parecchie segnalazioni su gruppi di persone che, di notte, si riuniscono in sperduti casolari di campagna per celebrarvi, pare, messe nere. Alcuni ragazzi, nottambuli come tanti loro coetanei, descrivono scene che sembrano tolte di peso da La sorcière di Jules Michelet. Il vescovo Tarcisio Carboni manifesta una seria preoccupazione per l’azione di queste ombre notturne, che definisce manipolatrici delle paure e delle angosce della gente (C.A., 29 settembre 1993).

Hanno dato fuoco al Lola. L’incendio che ieri notte ha devastato il locale di Scossici è sicuramente di origine dolosa. Lo dimostra la lattina di diluente lasciata sul posto dai piromani. Gli ignoti delinquenti hanno forzato una delle porte che danno sul lato nord del disco-bar, hanno riversato su pavimento e mobilia il contenuto della latta e poi hanno appiccato il fuoco… Dell’interno del locale non è rimasto praticamente nulla: poltrone, tavoli, accessori di ogni genere, tutto distrutto, con i vetri saltati per il calore, le colonne annerite dal fumo, “abbronzate”, ci ha detto con un amaro sorriso uno dei dipendenti, le lacrime agli occhi. Ecco la presumibile ricostruzione dei fatti. All’una e venti chiude i battenti il ristorante Venti Due, confinante con il Lola: all’una e tre quarti divampa l’incendio. Qualcuno ha visto, nei dintorni, un’auto in sosta, ma non ha dato peso alla circostanza; non sono poche le coppiette che approfittano della zona isolata per scambiarsi qualche effusione. Allertati, arrivano subito i vigili del fuoco di Civitanova, seguiti a breve distanza da quelli di Macerata e Osimo: sei autobotti in totale … L’incendio è stato rapidamente domato, ma le sue conseguenze sono apparse subito disastrose: centinaia di milioni di danni  (l.p. – C.A., 10 novembre 1993).

Il giorno dopo, uno dei titolari, Silvano Ascani, dichiara di avere in mente chi potrebbe essere stato l’autore del rogo, ma le indagini non approderanno a nulla di certo. Nella gente, intanto, cresce l’allarme. Qualcuno comincia a ricordarsi, non proprio benedicendoli, di quei politici e amministratori che si facevano belli cantando a squarciagola inni trionfali alla solita, immaginaria isola felice, reale soltanto sui giornali, in radio e in tv.
