cénciu – Nella Vie de Saint Alexis, un testo in antico francese (1050 circa) in cui viene narrata la vicenda del patrizio romano Alessio, che abbandona affetti e ricchezze per vivere un’esperienza religiosa in stretta povertà, nella strofa XXIX compare il vocabolo cinces (< latino cìncius). Siamo nel momento della grande disperazione dell’aristocratica Aglae, la madre di Alessio, che si reca nella stanza ormai vuota del figlio e: “Camera – disse – mai più sarai addobbata, / né più gioia sarà tra le tue pareti.” / E poi l’ha ridotta come saccheggiata dal nemico; / crine vi fa appendere e miserabili stracci (cinces): / il grande orrore in grande lutto è volto …

Il francese ha in seguito perduto il vocabolo in favore dell’attuale chiffon, attestato dalla letteratura colta già nel poeta Mathurin de Régnier nel 1608 e proveniente dall’antico francese chipe, che ha dato vita a chiffe = un pezzetto, una parte tolta, stracciata dal tutto. L’italiano, al contrario l’ha conservato e così ha fatto il dialetto, solitamente più fedele al latino lingua madre, mantenendo la desinenza us (u).

Il vocabolo è usato nell’espressione cénciu el pàggiu!, esclamazione di valore negativo, riferita a persona che non gode la stima di chi parla; come dire ah, che galantuomo!, ma con connotazione sarcastica.

Va notato che, più che dal francese page (giovane mandato a farsi un’educazione alla corte di un signore) il dialettale pàggiu dovremmo averlo mutuato da Venezia dove indicava anche i mozzi, i giovani apprendisti delle galee, ragazzi non particolarmente raccomandabili quanto a modi e comportamenti; anche qui, quindi, un valore negativo.

Si dice pure ‘mmullà’ el cénciu (bagnare lo straccio) nel senso di approfittare di una situazione, ma qui, per il momento, non mi sento di azzardare indicazioni sull’origine del detto salvo accennare a un’ipotesi tutta, però, da verificare. A Roma esisteva già nel XVII secolo un gioco chiamato cencio ammollo (straccio bagnato) e nulla vieta di pensare che, come tanti altri giochi, fosse conosciuto anche a Recanati e dintorni: i ragazzi partecipanti si mettevano in fila e uno di loro designato dalla sorte, dopo aver bagnato il cencio nell’acqua, si piazzava davanti al primo dei compagni a partire da sinistra tentando di farlo ridere con mosse, smorfie, battute. Se quello non resisteva e sorrideva, veniva colpito con lo straccio e poi si passava al successivo. L’idea sarebbe che chi ha bagnato il cencio si è messo nella posizione di comando e può approfittare della situazione per farla da padrone.
